Condition

Diverticular Disease

Diverticular disease occurs when small pockets form in the bowel wall and become inflamed or infected. It can cause pain, fever or bowel habit changes, and some patients may need specialist assessment with Mr Mathew Jacob to prevent recurrence or complications.

Understanding the Condition

Diverticular disease may cause left-sided abdominal pain, bloating, fever or changes in bowel habits. Many episodes are mild, but repeated or severe attacks can be disruptive. Review with Mr Mathew Jacob helps clarify the severity of the condition and appropriate next steps.

Diverticulitis occurs when small bowel pockets become irritated or infected. Ageing, diet, lifestyle and genetics all play a part.
These may include diverticulitis (infection and inflammation) abscess formation, perforation, fistula, bowel obstruction, diverticular bleeding.
Persistent pain, fever, recurrent flare-ups or findings on CT or colonoscopy are good reasons to seek a referral to Mr Mathew Jacob for assessment and guidance.
Management depends on severity and recurrence. Patient education about the condition and “triggers” that can lead to flareups is an important part of management. Mild episodes may be treated medically, while recurrent, complicated or severe disease may require surgical resection of the affected segment of bowel. Careful assessment ensures appropriate timing of intervention and optimal long-term outcomes.
