What’s Involved
Once your referral is received, an initial consultation will be arranged. Mr Mathew Jacob will take your history, examine the area of concern and explain any diagnosis or possible causes. This appointment is your chance to ask questions and understand your treatment options clearly.
Your consultation provides an opportunity to discuss symptoms, review investigations and examine the affected area. Mr Mathew Jacob will talk through his clinical impression and outline any recommended next steps.
If surgery or an endoscopic procedure is needed, Mr Mathew Jacob will obtain informed consent and explain the process clearly. His booking secretary will then help arrange a suitable date, provide preparation instructions and give you MBS item numbers to confirm with your health fund.
You’ll admit to your chosen facility, usually on the day of your gastroscopy, colonoscopy or planned operation. Mr Mathew Jacob and the anaesthetist will see you beforehand and answer any final questions to ensure you feel prepared and reassured.
Endoscopic procedures are typically day-only. Surgical procedures may require an overnight or short stay depending on recovery. The hospital team will support your progress with monitoring, pain management and postoperative guidance.
A follow-up appointment will be arranged before discharge. You’ll be provided with instructions for recovery, diet, wound care (if applicable) and when to seek help. The clinic is always available if questions arise.

General Surgery Conditions

Endoscopy

Hernias

A hernia occurs when internal tissue pushes through a weak spot in the abdominal wall, creating a lump or discomfort. They can occur in different areas and often need assessment by Mr Mathew Jacob, especially if symptoms worsen or the hernia increases in size.

Gallstones

Gallstones form in the gallbladder and can cause pain, nausea, or infection when they block the bile ducts. Many people remain symptom-free, but troublesome attacks often require review with Mr Mathew Jacob to prevent recurrence.

Skin & Soft Tissue Lesions

Soft tissue lumps such as lipomas, cysts and benign skin lesions are common and often harmless. When they grow, become uncomfortable or uncertain in nature, assessment with Mr Mathew Jacob helps determine the best treatment approach.
