Condition

Bowel Obstruction

Bowel obstruction occurs when there is a partial or complete blockage of the small or large intestine, preventing the normal passage of food, fluid and gas. It can develop suddenly (acute obstruction) or gradually over time.

Understanding the Condition

Common causes include adhesions (scar tissue from previous surgery), hernias, tumours, inflammatory conditions, or severe diverticular disease. Symptoms may include cramping abdominal pain, bloating, nausea, vomiting, constipation and inability to pass wind. Assessment typically involves a thorough physical examination and discussion of your medical history. It can also include imaging such as CT scanning or endoscopy. Management ranges from close observation and supportive care to urgent surgical intervention. Prompt specialist assessment is important to prevent complications such as bowel perforation or compromised blood supply.
